MIDDLE TENNESSEE VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION
CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
With the start of the TSSAA 2023 Girls Volleyball
Season comes a major milestone for the Middle
Tennessee Volleyball Association (MTVA). MTVA is
excited to be celebrating 50 years of providing
outstanding Certified Volleyball Officials for the
Middle Tennessee area.
Did you know volleyball was originally called
Mintonette? The origin of volleyball can be traced
back to 1895. An instructor for the YMCA in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, named, William G.
Morgan, blended parts of basketball, baseball,
tennis and handball to create a game less physically
demanding for businessmen.
In 1896 the first exhibition match of volleyball was
played at Springfield College.
In 1964 Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic
Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The Middle Tennessee Volleyball Association was
started by Kent Rea in 1973 in response to the passage of
the new Title IX law. In 1994, Kent Rea turned MTVA over to
Elaine Mitchell. Elaine worked tirelessly to cover the
growing sport for 13 years. Elaine had a very
personal touch as an assigner, she called every
official weekly to give them assignments.
In 2007 Diana Chalfant and Jeff Grissim became the
new Co-Assigners for MTVA. During their 13 year
tenure many advancements took place for MTVA.
Here are a few:
-Arbiter based assigning
-Website for officials and coaches to use.
-Mentor program for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd year
officials, Leader (Toni Woods)
-Paid Line Judges for JV and Varsity matches as
requested
-Whistle Notes, Editor -Toni Woods
-Paid Pre-Season work
-Mileage pay for all officials for post season
-On site official equipment purchase for officials
(provided by our own Bill Fee)
-On site certified Volleyball official shirts available
for purchase (provided by our own Sylvia Spencer)
In 2022, the Executive Director of the TSSAA, Bernard
Childress, approved a new MidWest Volleyball
Association allowing the Middle Tennessee
Volleyball Association to split. MTVA went from
serving 13 counties to 5 in the middle Tennessee
area. MTVA continues to serve Davidson,
Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson
Counties.
The Middle Tennessee Volleyball Association is
grateful for the leadership and vision of Kent Rea,
Elaine Mitchell and Jeff Grissim. Our foundation is
strong and we will continue to build on it moving
forward.
Diana Chalfant and Toni Woods continue to lead
MTVA as Co-Assigners and are excited about the
future.
